Special Extended Event Promotion

Wine Country Ontario helps solve the problem of what do with so many wines and so little time! You’ll love the ‘shopping list’ of recommended County wines prepared by wine writer Michael Pinkus and found in your TASTE! a celebration of regional cuisine event package on Saturday, September 25 at the Crystal Palace, Picton. As you partake in different off-site events, visit and purchase listed wines at participating wineries and they will validate your list. Drop off your completed list by December 31, 2010 at any of these wineries for a chance to win a case (12 bottles/750 ml) of delectable County wine.

The Settler’s Kitchen

A Trio of Cooking Classes Inspired by Settlers to Prince Edward County
September 26, 27 and 28th, 2010
Join the Waring House Cookery School as we explore the foods and techniques brought to Prince Edward County by early settlers. Our chefs will be leading these hands-on cooking classes, which will culminate in a large lunch.  Local history experts and local members of the Slow Food Movement will be on-hand to share their knowledge. You’ll leave with a full mind and a full belly!

German Settlers in Prince Edward County and Octoberfest Foods
This class is a little bit of history, and a lot of great food. Jennifer Lyons, head curator for the Prince Edward County Museums will take us on a quick tour of Rose House Museum, built in the early 1800s by Peter Rose,  a Hessian (German) soldier who had fought for the British in the American Revolution. Then we're on to Fifth Town Artisan Cheese, just up the road to sample a very special new cheese, named “Rose Haus”. Then it is back to the Waring House Cookery School to cook up a feast/fest. We will make our own sausages (with local meat) and talk about how to make your own at home. We will fill our Octoberfest Farmer's Platter out by making hot potato salad, roasted smoked pork loin, schnitzel, herring salad, sauerkraut and, to top it all off, apple strudel. Don't forget the Jaegermeister to toast the UMPAH! 10am-3pm

Mystery among the Vines

As part of our celebration of the expanded "TASTE" event we are hosting a multiple reading event where three of our local mystery writers will be previewing upcoming novels that are based in the County.

  • JD Carpenter, author of 74 Miles Away, the Twelve Trees and Bright's Kill
  • Janet Kellough, Head of a Pin.
  • Vicki Delany, Winter of Secret, In the Shadow of the Glacier, Burden of Memory and Gold Fever.

To tie it into "TASTE" we hope to have one or two of our newly bottled wines available for tasting and Jamie Kennedy has agreed to make a lamb poutine from some of By Chadsey's Cairns' lamb.

Straw bale seating will be available or bring your own chair. There will be a small charge for the poutine, and wine can be purchased at the store. Let us know if you plan to attend so that we can be sure to have sufficient quantities of the poutine available.

Helping with the Harvest - Experience the buzz of activity at a winery during harvest

Join Savvy Company as we lend a hand to Prince Edward County wineries to help with their grape harvest.  Several winemaker’s have reported that this year will be an outstanding vintage with the vines loaded with high quality grapes that will make outstanding wines.

On this day, we will help one of the following small wineries – depending on their harvest schedule:

  • Thirty Three Vines Winery
  • Bergeron Estate Winery
  • Hillier Creek Estate Winery
  • …and we are lining up other wineries.

We will spend the morning picking grapes, then enjoy a lunch feast in the vineyards. The afternoon is your own to explore Prince Edward County wineries. Our Sommeliers will gladly give you recommendations of places to visit.

Registration includes a special Helping the Harvest T-shirt, picking gloves, lunch in the vineyard & a bottle of the wine made with the grapes you picked (when the wine is ready in 2011)!

Gather friends, colleagues or bring the family for this one-of-a-kind experience.  You will be notified in advance which winery we will be helping on this day.

Time

9:00 am

Finish

Approximately 1:00 pm (after lunch)

Price

$25.00 per person includes commemorative t-shirt, harvest tools, a bottle of wine, winery lunch & taxes.
